EDWARD VII King of Great Britain and Ireland (House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha), (22nd January 1901 to 6th May 1910), eldest son of Victoria, born 9th November 1841. Even his tutors thought he was subjected to a too rigid education in a childhood which lacked affection. Later denied a useful role by his mother, he led a life of pleasure. and though his ladies attracted little scandal, his appearance in court as a witness in the Tranby Croft baccarat case did. It says much for his character that he emerged a loyal and warm-hearted man. In a short reign 'Edward the peacemaker' influenced foreign affairs - his European tours improved relations, e.g. The Entente Cordiale - and he played an important role encouraging Fisher's work for the navy. |
